Jeannette Winterson is one of those authors I'd been meaning to read, and yet for some reason never got around to it - until I ran across her new(ish) book on the edge of the Young Adult section at Borders the other day. It sounded intriguing, so I picked it up, along with a couple of heavier tomes, and it's the only one I've finished so far.
It's pretty standard fare, as far as children's fantasy/sci-fi adventures go, but she tells the story well, with kindness and (sometimes dark) humor. Silver is a likably imperfect heroine, though her sidekick, Gabriel, is sometimes too good for words. As foes go, Regalia Mason is a worthy one; I was pretty creeped out by some of her experiments and plans to take control of time.
It's a strange mix of a story. My favorite things: Bigamist, the Elf King, and the Vatican on the Einstein Line.
